When it comes to health and fitness, the hardest part is getting started. I often hear people say they’ll start coming to the gym once they “get in better shape” which is only holding them back. The truth is, very few people feel ready to change their lifestyle and habits, but you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable if you want to change your life.
I’m here to help you achieve those health goals you’ve been wanting to implement, here are three tips to get you started:
1. MAKE GOALS! It’s impossible to hit a target that you can’t see. “I want to be healthier” is a positive thought, but too vague to gauge if and when you’ve achieved the milestone. Set specific goals that can be measured. For example, instead of “I want to be healthier” try setting a goal such as, “I want to be able to walk 5km without being out of breath” or “I want to exercise 30 minutes a day, four days a week.” With specific goals you’re more likely to stick to your routine to achieve them.
2. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY. This might seem strange but telling someone you’re going to workout might just be that extra push you need to actually workout. I have many clients that need to book themselves in with me to ensure they get their movement in. They know I’ll be waiting for them, and they have paid for the hour, so they show up! Having a coach will help keep you on course towards your goals.
3. MAKE IT FUN! I understand not everyone correlates exercise to fun, not yet anyways, but it’s important to find something you enjoy to help you reach your goals. If you feel intimidated in the gym alone, try working in a 1:1 or small group environment, or try taking a spin or Pilates class instead. If you’d prefer to not be in the gym in the summer, then grab a friend and start hiking outdoors. If you can’t find any activities you like (I see you) book in with me and we’ll work together to find something active for you to do that will help you reach your goals
At the end of the day, it’s all about progress. Take your fitness journey one step at a time and don’t be too hard on yourself. We all have setbacks, we all have fears, and we all have busy lives, but as the saying goes “those who don’t make time for health will eventually have to make time for illness.” I am here as your personal trainer, your accountability buddy, and your support system on your health and fitness journey. Let’s connect and get you started!
