If you’ve paid attention to the health and wellness industries over the past couple years, chances are that you’ve heard someone talk about intermittent fasting.
So what exactly is it?
Basically, intermittent fasting refers to any diet that cycles between periods of fasting and eating for a predetermined period.
Many fast as part of their diet because it offers flexibility. It is an effective way to reduce total caloric consumption and can be much easier than trying to stick to a traditional reduced calorie diet.
Instead of strictly counting calories every day, intermittent fasting is all about when and how much you should eat.
And with benefits ranging from fat loss to improved focus, it’s a wonder that’s its become so popular in recent years?
Reason #1 Enhanced weight loss
The main reason intermittent fasting help you lose weight is because it is restricting the amount of calories your take in during a day.
Unless you're going to be gorging during the period you're supposed to be eating, the amount of calories you take in should be less than a regular day.
Reason #2 Healthful Sleep
Intermittent fasting causes insulin levels to drop and melatonin levels to rise. Melatonin is your body's primary sleep-promoting hormone and can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
Reason #3 Fat loss
Intermittent fasting has been shown to boost metabolism and fat burning while preserving lean body mass, all of which leads to fat loss and overall weight loss. It makes the body more effective at breaking down nutrients, which is what our body needs to be able to absorb in order to release the toxins.
Reason #4 Slow signs of aging
Believe it or not, intermittent fasting is done in most countries where the elder people look like they've got a lot of life left to live. Why? It slows down the degradation of DNA, which is what occurs when we age, and accelerates DNA repair, thus slowing down the aging process.
Reason #5 Cardiovascular system support
Intermittent fasting can decrease your low-density lipoprotein, also known as "bad" cholesterol. It's also thought that intermittent fasting may improve the way your body metabolizes sugar. This can reduce your risk of gaining weight and developing diabetes, which are both risk factors for heart disease.
Reason #6 Enhanced brain function and focus
One of the main ways intermittent fasting benefits the brain is by increasing proteins that the brain makes, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
These proteins are very beneficial to brain cells by being a growth factor. It grows new neurons (nerve/brain cells), allows them to talk to one another, and is a natural antidepressant.
Reason #7 Enhanced overall wellness
I strongly believe that reasons 1-6 drive the point of number 7 home. If you haven't tried intermittent fasting, or are scared... I completely understand.
Anything you try for the first time can be scary, but with all the amazing health benefits, there is only good that can come out of it.
