Many gyms across the country have reopened to regular operations since the initial shutdown from COVID-19. But, let's be honest; from work time to workout time, many of us have really gotten in the groove of at-home life.
You may not find yourself excited about the idea of using shared weight machines again or taking group exercises classes with strangers. Or you may be really enjoying your time close to home. Regardless, this doesn’t negate the fact that we have to keep our body active and moving! So here are some budget friendly tips to create an inexpensive gym, right in the comfort of your own home.
Resistance Bands
Cost: $10+
Exercises: Clamshells, leg lifts, almost any bodyweight exercise.
You can amp up nearly every classic exercise you can think of by adding extra resistance. Resistance bands help you build strength, improve mobility, help you focus your control, promote better form, and are a great alternative to machines. There is a lot more movement involved when using resistance bands compared to more traditional style exercises which is why they’re a fundamental for functional training!
Dumbbells
Cost: $20 a piece (depending on the weight)
Exercises: Bicep curls, shoulder press, overhead triceps extension, flies, deadlifts, the works!
The use of dumbbells have many cited benefits including: boosting resting metabolic rate (burning calories), protecting your body against injury, increasing the strength of bones, muscles and connective tissue, and they can help improve both muscle force and flexibility. Dumbbells are an extremely versatile and beneficial piece of equipment to have in your home gym.
Balance Ball
Cost: $10-$30
Exercises: Jackknife, plank, bridge, back extension.
Stability balls can help improve your flexibility, expand your range of motion, strengthen your core, and improve your balance. They’re also a great alternative to your office chair if you’re working from home!
Yoga Mat
Cost: $8+
Exercises: endless possibilities!
Yoga mats help you avoid injuries, help correct poses, boost physical wellness, and make yoga more accessible.
