Finding Your Why - Motivation and Mindset

You know you need to get on track with your overall health and well-being, but it can be hard to know where to start... You’ve tried before, and it hasn’t been sustainable for whatever reason and you are hesitant to try again. You just can’t seem to find the time or motivation to exercise, meal prep, or sign up for support. Does all of this sound familiar? So, how do you get yourself into the mindset you know you need to be in to succeed, and then maintain motivation?

The first step is to figure out your why. Think about what the change(s) are that you need to make - if you're constantly feeling stressed and tired, it's balance you need. If you are having digestive issues, you should focus on making some positive changes to your diet. If you want to run a 5km next summer but haven’t run in years, it's time to start a step at a time. Whatever your goal, you need to understand your why behind the changes you need and want to make.

Once you have figured your why out, incorporate actions that will give you motivation and get you in the right mindset. Here is how:

  • Set the goal - i.e. run 5km for next summer.
  • Break the task/goal down into smaller sets - i.e. you have 7 months to get to 5km, start with a goal of 1km the first month, adding another 1km each month until you reach 5km at 5 months, then spend 2 months maintaining this achievement before the race.
  • Create a schedule - put it in your calendar, adding in room for flexibility in case something needs to shift - i.e. run every Wednesday and Friday morning, Sunday is a flex day if Wednesday or Friday didn’t work out.
  • Tell a friend - have someone hold you accountable, and maybe they will even want to join in! Having a partner in crime really helps with motivation. Tell them what you want them to do - i.e. check in every Sunday evening to see how you have done for the week and your action plan for the upcoming week.
  • Be kind to yourself - if you have an off day, or even an off week, this isn’t the be all/end all. Tomorrow is a new day, next week is a new week - pick up where you left off and have grace with yourself.
  •  Tell yourself you can and you will!!!
