The Connection Between Your Mental and Physical Health

It is becoming increasingly known that our mental and physical health are closely intertwined. There are multiple connections between mental health and chronic physical conditions that significantly impact people’s quality of life. The mind-body connection is very complex and yet, at the same time, so simple. The way we think and feel about ourselves and the world around us can both have a direct impact on our physical body and on our minds.

Maintaining good physical health can have a significant impact on mental health. Regular physical exercise is known to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, reduce stress and increase overall mood. Physical exercise increases the release of endorphins in the brain, which helps to relieve tension in the body and increase mood.

Having a mental health problem doesn’t mean it’s inevitable that you will develop a physical health problem. There are things you can do to give yourself the best chance of staying physically well. These things include, but are not limited to:

  • Exercise - get your body moving - walking, stretching, swimming, lifting weights - anything that feels good for you is good for you.
  • Eat a balanced diet - think whole grains, fruits and vegetables, plenty of protein - and a treat every now and again is good for you!
  • Avoid drugs and smoking - your whole body health will thank you!
  • Reduce alcohol consumption - monitor your alcohol intake. Mocktails are a great option when you are going out and socializing.
  • Prioritize sleep - strive for 7-8 hours per night - try to keep a regular sleep schedule as best as possible.
  • Find a relaxation technique that works for you - meditation, breath work, yoga, massage, journaling etc.
  • Stay connected to people - try to make time for friends and family - a coffee or walk date once a week, a phone call to catch-up. Being around people that you enjoy will boost your mood and makes a world of difference.
  • Seek help when needed - whether you are feeling like your physical and mental health isn’t where you want it to be to feel optimal, or not - it is never a bad thing to have a trusted person to talk to. It is extremely important to have healthy outlets to express your feelings and talk through life’s challenges.

And, know that I am always here for you if you find yourself needing someone to talk to. Do not hesitate to reach out.
