The Power of Accountability

When it comes to setting and mastering goals, there are some tools we can implement that will help to keep us on track and give us the best chance of success. Studies show that the act of making a public commitment gives us a 65% chance of succeeding at a goal; so, if you’ve been eyeing your first 5k marathon, maybe now is the time to share that with your circle or online community. Even more impressive, is that similar studies have shown that having a specific accountability partner increases your chance of goal success by over 85%! So, what is it about accountability that takes our goals from set to success?

TRANSPARENCY IS KEY

Part of the power of accountability comes from being transparent with your coach or accountability partner. First you must set clear goals and intentions. Then, transparency means accurately reporting where you are in your goal journey, celebrating the milestones you’ve achieved and being open to ideas from your partner for pivoting the work needed to succeed if your milestones aren’t being made.

ON TRACK AND FOCUSED

Meeting with your accountability support is a great way to break your goals down into smaller, achievable milestones, which you should review in each of your accountability chats to ensure your trajectory stays on course. Your accountability partner will also help to identify obstacles or blind spots that you may have, which could be hindering your success; be prepared to have your partner bring up physical and mental habits that may need some attention.

ACCOUNTABILITY IS RESPONSIBILITY

The majority of failed goals come from patterns of making excuses. Without accountability, there is no one to be held responsible to, and it’s as if the goal truly never existed. There’s a Tony Robbins saying that I love; “it's what you practice in private that you will be rewarded for in public.” When you have support in the form of accountability, you’ll begin to realize that you’re making better choices “in private” knowing that your milestone check-ins are coming up. The choices you’re making, and the responsibility that you’re taking for your own success is also how healthy habits are naturally formed.

SOUNDING BOARD

Having accountability provides you with the opportunity to check in with your coach or partner on a regular basis, which ensures a bad week doesn’t turn into quitting all-together. Bad day and wanting to go on a junk-food binge? Text your accountability partner instead. Feeling sluggish and wanting to skip another workout? Reach out to your accountability partner for support or to schedule a workout together.
