Tips For Staying Healthy This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a very busy time, which can make it difficult to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. Many of us enter the holiday season with the intention of eating healthfully and exercising regularly. Frequently, we place far too much pressure on ourselves and end up falling completely off the wagon.

Did you know you can still enjoy the holiday season and work toward your goals? It’s time to ditch the all-or-nothing mentality because I have some tips to help you navigate the holidays realistically and sustainably! Let’s jump right into it…

Remember the Golden Rule

I’m referring to the 80/20 rule! Focus on eating 80% whole foods and save the 20% for foods that might be less nutritious, but you enjoy. Finding balance is key to staying on track, and it’s ok to indulge and enjoy yourself during the holiday season. One slice of pie isn’t going to make or break your progress!

Sip, Sip, Hooray

Did you know that our bodies consist of more than 50 percent water? Therefore, staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining good health and eliminating toxins! Drinking water can help you feel fuller and help your digestive system keep doing its thing too.

Choose Nutritious Options

We’ve already talked about the golden rule, but let’s elaborate! If you’re attending a dinner, try to opt-in for healthier whole food options. Fill 80% of your plate with vegetables and protein that will satisfy your hunger. If you’re like me and have a sweet tooth, this is where the 20% comes in. Treat yourself to a dessert or glass of wine and don’t restrict yourself, as this usually has a negative outcome rather than a positive one.

Catch Those Z’s

Sleep is crucial to both your physical and mental health. Not getting enough sleep reduces your energy and can increase your stress levels. If you’re feeling run down, you’re less likely to exercise, and often more likely to indulge in less nutritious options. Make sure you establish an evening routine for yourself so you’re in bed at a reasonable time and ready to go the next morning.

Exercise in the A.M.

Who wants to workout after they’ve had a big dinner? Definitely not me! If you plan on exercising on the day of a dinner party or event, I suggest doing this in the morning. This helps you to start your day on a positive note and will have you feeling great and ready to take on the day. Who doesn’t love a natural post-workout glow?

Last but not least, enjoy the holiday season! You should not spend so much time worrying that you forget to enjoy yourself. Remember that we strive for progress, not perfection, and I am confident that you can do it! If you’re looking for more guidance or support during the holidays, reach out and I am happy to help.
