Tips For Staying on Track in the Summer

The warmer weather is here, and that means vacation time, backyard BBQ’s and spending days enjoying the sunshine. Many people struggle to maintain a health and fitness routine during these summer months as schedules are shaken up. Here are my top tips for you to help you stay health-conscious over the next few months.

Routine

It can be tough to keep a routine going throughout the summer when our weekly schedules change, especially if you’ve got kiddos on summer break! Having your healthy habits in place will help you to maintain as much of a routine as possible, keeping you on track to your health goals. Planning meals, getting enough sleep and listening when your body needs down time are all great routine staples to execute.

Stay Active

Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the warm weather and gorgeous views by taking your workout outdoors. Walking, biking, hiking and swimming can all be great workouts.

Do you usually get your movement in first thing in the morning? Even if the summer months are a bit of a later start to the day, ensure you honour your commitment to moving your body daily. Plan your movement activities ahead of time when you’re travelling so you’re not taken by surprise.

Plan Your Meals

Even if you’re eating away from home more often during the summer, it doesn’t mean that you must throw meal planning out the window. Having fresh ingredients on hand will make meals on the fly a breeze!

In the summer, instead of meal planning for 7 dinners for the week, you might only need to do 4 to account for BBQ’s and nights out. I recommend practicing the 80/20 rule in life – that means balancing plenty of healthy home-cooked meals with your dinners out or takeout. Don’t deny yourself all the summertime treats and memories – just be mindful of them.

Keep Your Goals Top of Mind

Knowing what you want and checking in with your goals regularly gives you something to work towards! If you’re working to maintain your weight, consider opting for French fries during a weekly meal out, and having salads or greens for other dine-out meals.
