Understanding Gut Health

Did you know!? There are around 40 trillion bacteria in your body… most of which are found in your gut. Collectively, they are known as your gut microbiome, and they’re incredibly important for our overall health.

The gastrointestinal system is your main “portal” for taking in and processing nutrients, and it also serves as a communication center and disease fighter for your body. Many recent studies have shown that a disrupted microbiome can lead to numerous chronic diseases. From your nervous and immune systems to your mental health and digestive function, a healthy gut plays a crucial role in your overall well-being.

Here are some of the top tips for a healthy gut, that can also help to reduce gastrointestinal and stomach problems:

  • Eat a healthy diet – consume a diverse range of mostly fresh, unprocessed, whole foods. This includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes and beans, as well as a variety of protein sources.
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals to not overwhelm the GI tract.
  • Chew your food thoroughly, it helps with digestion.
  • Eat or take probiotics - yogurt, kefir, fresh sauerkraut and supplements.
  • Drink lots of water and stay hydrated!
  • Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake.
  • Exercise – movement helps to get things moving and flowing!
  • Manage your stress - whatever works for you - try yoga, breath work, journaling, movement, meditation, talking to someone, etc.

What are some of the benefits and indicators of a healthy gut?

  • Your gut acts like a second brain – a healthy gut can help in easing symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • A healthy gut often shows in glowing skin
  • A stronger immune system comes with gut health
  • Happy gut health can help you maintain a healthy weight
  • Chronic illnesses may be more manageable with better gut health

Check in with yourself and be sure make changes as needed, finding what makes you feel your best. If you are doing all of these things yet are still experiencing GI and stomach problems regularly that are of concern, be sure to talk to your doctor, as they may be able to provide insight and further guidance. As always – I’m here to help if you need health tips, training advice or someone to talk to.
